“Dad, I wish you could come home soon,” she said in her last phone call to him.
“I know Sweetie, but I have to work. It won’t be for much longer, I promise.”
She worried about her mother. Lately, she was looking overwhelmed and exhausted as she tried to juggle her many responsibilities.
Esther spent most of her time alone chalking in the front yard, and while outside, realized that she didn't much like the house across the street where Mrs. Fey and her daughter lived. It looked old and unkempt.
“Are you okay?” Esther’s mother had come out to check on her one morning.
She shrugged her shoulders, “I miss dad and my friends. You and grandpa are always so busy you can’t spend much time with me.”
Her mother bent down beside her, “I’m sorry honey. It’s been so hectic especially with your dad being away, but it will get better soon,” and she went back into the house.
As she stood up to go inside, Esther looked over at the Fey house again. Its weathered siding made it look scary to Esther. Then she noticed that the drapes were open and there was someone inside looking out at her. She panicked and dashed into her house and ran straight into her grandfather.
“Slow down young lady, why are you in such a hurry?”
Esther started crying and told her grandfather what she had seen.
“You saw Lydia in the window. She’s homebound most of the time, and has been in a wheelchair since she was a child. I must agree the outside of the house needs a little work, but me and some of the people from church are going over there this afternoon to do some repairs and paint the house.
Esther pouted. “I thought you were going to spend some time with me.”
He took her hand. “Why don’t we go meet Lydia. Perhaps you could keep her company today when the volunteers are over at her house. It would be a very important job.”
“I like the sound of that Grandpa. I haven't had much to do lately,” and they smiled at each other.
They walked up the path of Lydia’s house and rang the doorbell.
The door was slowly opened by a gray-haired woman. “Hello Mr. Cassidy,” she said, and then her faced beamed when she saw Esther. “Oh, is this your granddaughter?”
“Yes, Mrs. Fey, this is Esther. She saw Lydia at the window earlier and we wondered how she was feeling.”
“Oh, she’s doing very well, and is very excited about everyone coming by today. Come in and meet her, Esther”
They walked into a small room filled with sunlight. A woman in her 30s with dark shoulder-length hair sat in a wheelchair by the window. The little girl thought that Lydia had a kind smile and warm eyes.
“Lydia, Esther was wondering if she could assist you this afternoon?” Mrs Fey said.
“Well, that would be wonderful. I will be making some snacks and cold drinks for the church volunteers, would you like to help me Esther? I would really appreciate it if you could.”
She smiled a shy smile, “I would love to help.”
Esther and her grandpa sat at the kitchen table eating lunch before they left to go to work at Mrs. Fey’s house when her mother came rushing into the room, “Esther, I might be able to spend some time with you today,” she said looking through some files. “I just need to find a form for the insurance company.”
“It’s okay, Mom, she said calmly. “Maybe we can hang out this evening, I’m going to be very busy this afternoon.” she said proudly.
