The run became frenzied, and the dog barked, no longer with pleasure but with aggression and alarm; his world had been invaded and his mistress was in distress.
The man had appeared out of the dunes, no shadow proclaiming his presence, no sound precluding his propulsion into her space. An instant’s perception showed dirty clothing, and the sun’s rays, no longer golden, reflected the silver of his knife.
She ran, barefoot, hampered by the sand, and aware of his persistent pursuit close behind.
Thankful for her habit of early morning jogging, thankful for the willingness of Woof to run with her, thankful that so far she was ahead, Yvette shot up a fervent prayer for help, humanly impossible though it seemed. The nearest habitation was a good kilometre away, back beyond the Mangrove swamps she had passed on the way, weird and creepy in their brooding darkness. There was no sign of another early morning wanderer on the beach where the rising sun reflected on the blue of the Indian Ocean. The aggressor had chosen a good time and place. Woof was battling, his willingness hampered by the shortness of his legs, and she knew he would be better alone, but if she released the leash what would he do? Perhaps put himself in danger by turning to challenge the hobo, if such he was.
Ahead was a patch of pebbly sand that would slow her more; a decision had to be made. Crime was rife down on the South coast of Africa, and against her husband’s instruction she had chanced an early morning run, enjoying the solitude and choosing to ignore the dangers. Releasing the leash she turned to face the attacker, determined to fight for her life, and surprised to see that as Woof leapt towards him, all terrier spunk, he fell to his knees as the leash, like the thong of a whip, spun round his ankle and destroyed his balance. Amazingly the knife flew towards her, and in the seconds available she had retrieved it. The earlier menace of his body language disintegrated, and Yvette took the advantage.
“In the Name of Jesus Christ I command you to leave this place.”
The words took her by surprise, and afterwards she could only think she had been the recipient of a miracle, for the man, thin and weather-worn, with a look of surprise, turned away and stumbled back into the dunes leaving an astounded Yvette, knife still in hand, watching his retreat which was being encouraged by a yapping and indignant Woof.
Yvette picked up the leash again and gave Woof a grateful hug. Her steps were hurried now as she hastened back to the holiday flat, knowing that this would be the last walk she would be allowed to enjoy alone, once Ben heard about her adventure. She scanned the dunes but saw no sign of her lurking adversary in the ghostly shadows and wondered about his circumstances. What brought a person to such a low, and how could he be helped back into society?
What would you do in such circumstances?
Should Yvette try to find the man, with Ben’s help, and discover his problems?
What about his intentions and background?
Why he was there in the first place and what had taken him there?
Should the police be informed?
What is the potential humanly speaking?
What is the potential with spiritual connotations?
What would you do?
