I opened the door quietly, hoping not to awaken my husband from a much needed afternoon nap. The sound of laughter surprised me as I put my car keys away.
I peeked into the living room and saw Richard sitting in his favorite chair. He looked up, still laughing and asked, “Have you ever been called bird brain?”
“Not to my face,” I cautiously responded, eyeing my husband who is known for his wit and humor. I wondered what he had come up with this time.
“Well, I’ve spent the last hour watching one of the most interesting documentaries I’ve seen in a while. It turns out that being called a bird brain is not a bad thing, it is a compliment!”
A few years back Richard delved into the study of growing racing pigeons. He did all the research and for a time planned to get involved in the sport. He studied the birds extensively and loved every minute of it. Then to my surprise, it was over. He came to the conclusion, “When it gets right down to it, it is the research I love!” Though I supported him in his endeavor, I breathed a sigh of relief when that particular project ended.
In Richard’s research there was scientific documentation that earth’s magnetic field keeps racing pigeons on course during their flight, though their vision helps guide them once they are within, get this, twenty miles of home! However, the new documentary reported new findings, the conclusion being, it is the bird’s olfactory system, their sense of smell that guides pigeons. They literally smell their way home. Even more amazing is that air pollution makes these birds fly faster, as much as 20% faster. Scientists believe this is because of what we call an adrenaline rush, caused by a sense of fear that their smell is fading.
These findings blew me away. That God would put so much detail into birds made me wonder, so I researched! You guessed it! God didn’t stop with pigeons. I found that woodpeckers and blue jays hoard nuts for coming months, then return for them, proof of long term memory. Turkeys line up wing to wing and walk through fields to flush out insects to feast on. But the blue heron is the most amazing. These beautiful birds go fishing. They willingly accept small pieces of bread tossed to them by onlookers. Instead of feeding on it, they drop it in the water, then wait for a fish to nibble on it. They rapidly scoop up the fish, a much tastier treat than bread.
God’s insatiable love for everything He has created continuously overwhelms me. The bible tells us that though sparrows are cheap, not one of them falls to the ground without God’s knowledge. Psalm 50:11 says that God knows all the birds of the mountains.
So where do we fit into God’s magnificent planning? He clearly tells us that of everything He made, we are His masterpiece! For many of us there are days we feel like anything but a masterpiece. That’s why trusting what God says helps us know who we are. He wants to display us to a world that needs light in the darkness.
How cleaver of our adversary to coax us into doubting our Father. What better way to decrease our level of faith. He prefers that we believe God’s love is not constant, but a love that ebbs and flows much like the waves of the ocean, sometimes there, and when we don’t measure up, sometimes not.
My husband says the saddest line he’s ever heard in a movie was spoken by Marlon Brando when he said, “I could have been somebody.” That is the way our enemy wants us to think. But God says we are somebody, we are priceless, a masterpiece, a person of great worth. He wants us to trust His words. If God watches over birds, can you imagine how excited He gets about His plans for us! All we have to do is trust Him.
