Our apartment was in a beautiful neighborhood, where the lawns were cut with precision mowers and flowers grew tall and straight from spring until autumn. Our neighbors were all older people and the whole place was ruled by cleanliness. Even the sidewalks looked like they were washed clean with whitewash. The greenness of the freshly mowed grass made the sky a purple blue and the brightness of the August sun glared at us as we alighted from our 57 Chevy. We got a few stares and a whole lot of smiles and waves from the little neighborhood. We later found out that we were the only young couple on the whole street. I had a two year old and was big with child the day that we moved in.
The love of my life and I were expecting our second child, the first one was a beautiful son whose name is Junior. He was exactly 2 and one half years old when we brought our little girl Vickie home from the hospital. Her bassinette set just beside my bed and her brother loved to look in on her. He loved her with all his heart and when I needed something for her, he would go get it and say, “Here it is Mommy”! I could tell he was going to be the big brother she would always need. The day we came home from the hospital, he started calling her sissie and that is her name to this very day.
My husband was one of those second shift men who left for work at 3 in the evening and did not return until 1 in the morning, it was an hour drive each way. This day was like any other day, he left for work and I took care of our children. In the late afternoon I decided to go to the bathroom and take care of some personal stuff and of course, I had to lock the door. When I started to open the door to leave, the door would not open. The whole lock system was just jammed shut and I was locked in. There was no window in my bathroom and I knew that I was up a creek without a paddle. Being only 19 years old, I totally lost my mind. I had no one, not even a telephone. I had a 2 year old son and a five day old baby girl waiting for mommy to come out of the bathroom.
I immediately called for Junior and he stood outside the bathroom door waiting for me to come out, but I was stuck, locked in my own bathroom. I started talking to Junior in tender tones, I said, “Junior, please don’t climb up on the edge of the bassinette while Mommy is in here", and he said, “Mommy I pomise I won’t”. I told him that I was locked in and he had to be a big boy and listen while Mommy screamed for help. I screamed for help at the top of my lungs praying silently that someone would hear me, but of course no one heard me but Junior, Vickie, and God.
I sat down on the commode with my head in my hands praying to God to help me. I was scared half to death. About the time I got through praying, old slew foot sneaked in and sat down on the edge of the bathtub beside me telling me terrible lies. He said, “When, and if you finally do get out of here, your baby is going to be dead, your wonderful son will climb up there in that bassinette and turn her over and hurt her really bad". He said, “Look where you are, there’s not one thing you can do, your hands are tied”. I swallowed all his lies for a minute or two and suddenly out of nowhere this voice whisper said to me, “God helps those who help themselves”! I said, “But how Father, how”? The voice said, “Stand up and go to the towel closet”.
I went to the towel closet and started throwing clean towels and wash rags left and right. Tucked away in the corner was a little orange box that said, “Tool kit”. I don’t think I had ever had a screw driver in my hand in my whole life. It took me about an hour, but at the end of that hour, there was a complete hole in that door and Junior, Vickie and I were having supper in our cozy little apartment.
