My bedroom decor consisted of purple walls plastered with Woodstock posters, peace signs, and a black light. The sounds of the Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater, and of course Janis Joplin played constantly on my portable record player.
We had no central heat and air. So in the summer, I raised the windows and turned on the box fan which just circulated the hot air. And in the winter I snuggled underneath piles and piles of home-made quilts to stay warm on brutally cold nights.
I made phone calls on a busy party line using a rotary dial phone and watched television shows in black and white only. I had to get up off the couch to turn the channel or adjust the rabbit ear antenna to get a decent picture.
We played outside until way after dark using whatever we could find and fulfilled vivid imaginations. We'd catch lightning bugs and put them in a canning jar, poke holes in the top of the lid, and then carry them inside to shine in the darkness of our bedrooms.
I did my research at the local library using a card index and the help of a good librarian. We played board games like Monopoly, Pollyanna, and checkers, and went to the drive in theater to watch a movie. Huge brown grocery bags filled with popcorn made at home provided our refreshments for the evening.
Economically, times were tough but friends and families helped each other out in time of need. The general population lost faith in government affairs and various groups fought, protested, and won equal rights. Traditional family roles declined but technological innovations grew rapidly and now, today, we're bombarded with technical gadgets offering both pros and cons.
Our homes are now built and filled with a variety of modern conveniences and cell phones have taken over complex systems such as utilities, traffic control and banking, just to name a few. Body language is being totally left out of personal communication and human interactions, yet, I don't' feel safe leaving home without my cell phone. And apps like Google Maps have saved me tons of money, time, and frustrations!
Our children are spending way too much time indoors sitting in front of monitor screens with game controllers in their hands, yet, there are electronic games that make learning fun and fast paced instead of boring and obsolete.
Emails have taken over written correspondence and status updates have replaced true friendships and lunch dates. Yet, when my dad had a quadruple by-pass this past year, posting progress updates via my FB page sure was easier than making and returning hundreds of phone calls.
Research is now unlimited and there is absolutely nothing, we can't find out about and learn via the web. But there's so much information available – how do we know what's true and what isn't?
Most importantly of all is the fact that today, with the variety of technological innovations God has provided us with, we can now fulfill the great commission like never before!
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Amen. (Matthew 28: 19 & 20 KJV)

It's as if you eloquently described the days of our youth, and contrasted with the days of today's youth.
Technology is a wonderful thing when used in moderation. I really liked your story. I felt a clearer transition between the good old days, and now a days, would have been helpful.
Great story. Nice job.
Blessings~
