Blinded by the Light

The Lord gives sight to the blind… Psalm 146:8 NIV

We drive briskly down the road in our SUV listening to our favorite radio station. A cheerful mood invades our vehicle as the kids and I chat about the upcoming school day. We boast about how refreshing it is to see sun shine after so many days of rain.

“I wish I would’ve remembered to bring my sunglasses with me this morning,” I casually joke.

As I speak the words, we round a curve as the sun gleams in full force. I adjust the visor to hopefully hide the sun but to no avail, I am completely blinded by the illuminating force in the sky. I put on my brakes, panicking, because I cannot see anything in front of me. The horizon ahead is just a blur of glowing, bright light. My palms grow sweaty as I grip the steering wheel tighter.

All of sudden, the tree skyline blocks the sun for a moment - just in time to see we are quickly approaching a cluster of red brake lights in our lane. There’s not enough time to stop without ramming into the car stopped before me. My heart pounds as I reflexively swerve the SUV into the turning lane beside us, thus avoiding the collision. God is surely with us this morning.

Needless to say, the kids and I are shaken up as we realize we scarcely missed a wreck which could have been disastrous. We praise God for His protection and are so thankful no one is injured.

Later, as I reflect on the incident, I marvel at how the sun provides much needed light, giving clarification to a dark world but is also the same force which caused me to be sightless on my morning commute.

Sometimes things in this world just don’t make sense. Whether it’s a tough situation I’m dealing with or wondering why my children are going through certain struggles, I often become blinded to God’s purposes and plan. It’s hard for me to see things clearly but there is One who is omnipotent, with unrestricted vision. The Lord gives hope that one day, even if not while on this earth, I will understand. My eyes will be opened and given a fresh, pure perspective-God’s perspective.

Are you struggling today with circumstances that blur or cast glare on your vision? Fix your eyes on Jesus. As obstacles are thrown in your path, causing fear and confusion on how to prevail, trust God. Have persistent faith in revelation in His perfect timing. Your sight, like mine, will be restored as He has promised.

“Heavenly Father, thank You for Your relentless love, protection, and provision of all my needs. Grant me peace in all situations and grow my faith in Your vision for my life. Make Your ways clear to me, in Your absolute timing, so I may glorify You in all I say and do. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

This is a good devotional. I think the analogy of the blinding sunlight didn't exactly match the theme of clarification, but perhaps the morning sun after the dark night could be used.
