Aaron twirled his staff between his fingers. “I could lead the people by doing this. Just do a little high step and they’ll follow right along.” He threw the wooden stick high into the air and deftly caught it.
“You remember what Moses did to me when I got on my high horse,” Miriam continued.
“At least this thing would be useful again. Hasn’t seen much action since Moses used it with the Egyptians.”
“You’re ignoring me. Listen to your big sister! I’m trying to tell you something.”
Sulking, Aaron stopped playing and set the staff down. He folded his hands in a mocking attitude of submission and waited.
“You know how we went to Moses because we thought he’d married down with that Cushite woman, and there we were, prophets just like him?”
“Your point?”
“He put us in our place, me particularly! I’ll never forget my hand all leprous and icky.” Miriam shivered. “Anyway, I think Korah’s asking for it.”
Aaron frowned and Miriam raised her hands in exasperation. “You don’t even know what I’m talking about! You’re spending too much time in that tent. Did cloud smoke addle your brain?”
“I heard Dathan and Abiram whispering together the other day. Something about them being Reubenites so they should be top dogs since they’re the oldest of the firstborn family. Sounded like they’ve got it in for Moses.”
“They must have been whispering awful loudly. Who doesn’t know? And Korah’s bent out of shape because he’s a Levite and doesn’t get to help you and the boys at the sacrificial altar. He always was a little knife-happy. As a child he worried me, slitting the throats of every bird he got his hands on.”
“Bet he had a swell time with those quail.”
“I’m not going there. At least it was a change from manna 24/7. Here’s a prophetic word. Some day a song will be written describing all the ways we ate manna: manna burgers, manna-cotti, ba-manna bread. Green somebody. He wouldn’t make fun of us if he only knew!”
“You’re getting off subject,” Aaron said.
“Right. Oh my. Here comes Korah now. Look! There’s Moses falling flat on his face again. That brother of ours can be so clumsy!”
“Um, Miriam, I don’t believe that’s the reason. See how angry he is. Quite a few guys are backing up those three.” Aaron shook his head. “You may be right about trouble, sis.”
The next morning the rebels gathered 250 strong with their censors lit at the Tent of Meeting. “We want justice!” Korah demanded.
Some distance away Aaron began sweating. He said to Miriam, “My foolish sons did something like that. Hope these guys aren’t drunk.”
Voices rose as tempers flared among Korah’s followers. “It may not make any difference,” Miriam said. Her previously leprous hand twitched; she grabbed it with the other one to make it stop.
“If I was one of those guys that Moses just told the people to move away from I’d be somewhat concerned,” Aaron said.
“Is he calling down a curse on them? I can’t watch.” Miriam covered her eyes but peeked through splayed fingers as the ground rumbled beneath their feet.
His face filled with ecstasy, Aaron asked, “Are they being raptured?”
“No, dummy, when that happens people will go up. The earth swallowed them and fire consumed the rest. I don’t think they’re going to paradise.”
Several minutes later Moses commanded Eleazar to collect the remains of the censors to pound them flat.
“Not a bad idea,” Aaron said. “They’re such a temptation. That incense goes to the head. Who needs rolling papers for it, or even a pipe? Always makes me see colors and patterns. Who knows what it does to people not used to it when they inhale it the first time?”
Miriam sighed. “Boys! Come along; it’s time to get some fresh air and rest. I’m getting a revelation that Moses will be putting you to work tomorrow to stop a plague.”
