The firemen who arrive to quench the flames and rescue the inhabitants cannot withstand the heat and soon take to their heels like the rest of the people.
Behind them, freshly erupted magma with a hot pyroclastic flow of temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit is in hot pursuit at about 60 miles per hour.
He remembers the warning.
Hurry! Get out right now, destruction is coming!
There is no power except for the rivers of light - the glow from burning sulfur. This is the worst blackout ever. Dense laze plumes containing as much as 10-15 parts per million of hydrochloric acid can be seen through the glow.
As suddenly it begins to rain, blood curdling screams can be heard from men, women, and children alike as this rain falls on them; eating away both their clothing and skin. People are dropping one after the other. Here is a race against time, and really every man is for himself.
Then he hears the unmistakable sound of his wife’s voice...
“Don’t leave me.”
She is in agony but there is not much that he can do. He knows that if he stays to help, they will both perish. Carrying her along is not an option because he cannot stop the corrosion, and death is inevitable.
His wife is left behind.

Many hours (seems more like many days) later, it is sunrise and everything – living or inanimate has been destroyed, but he and his children make it out alive.

He sits outside the shack facing the plains. All is still. The man has deep regrets. The tragic loss of his wife still haunts him. Liquor cannot mask the ache that is deep in his heart. However, that’s not the worst pain. He is soon going to be a dad again and grandpa, too. To him, it’s a double catastrophe. The man is in intense shame and can only hope that his story will be heard long after his demise – whenever that will be. This is surreal.
His thoughts are interrupted...
“Dad, the baby’s coming now! We need your help!”
