As I wander through another season of winter, I experience the near quiet of pure white barrenness. I hear the muffled crunch of snow beneath my boots. The frosty air steals my breath which forms puffs of clouds in front of me. The icy wind whistles around my face painting a watercolor of rosy red on my cheeks. My fingers grow stiff.
Overhead, the sky is pregnant with the promise of more snow, which like a blanket, God will spread over the land. An illuminating full moon can be seen through the pines in the distance. The branches of the trees have become instruments being played at God’s discretion. I imagine the Great Musician’s foot on the skating pond keeping time to the forest symphony.
He waves His shimmering scepter like an artist’s paint brush as winter descends upon the earth.
Walking through His wonderland, I view silver-crusted mountains, hills dusted whimsically with a powdered-flurry of snowfall, glittering-flakes of now frozen snow on window panes, and foot-long icicles hanging from roof tops like pendant chandeliers of ice, and I accept God’s invitation to praise His holy work.
Some people feel that it is not so easy to see the love of God in the winter. But I feel that it is the perfect time to reflect and draw close to Him and to my loved ones. I remain in awe at how He is preparing new spring life amidst the dead and dying of summer and autumn growth.
The frosty breath of God is a reminder of His presence and His faithfulness. A promise that every season will be preserved and that each deserves my appreciation of its uniqueness.
