What are your favorite foods? Probably chocolate is right there on top along with other creamy delights.
What are your least favorite foods? You know like that liver Mom used to make you eat because it was good for you? I always drowned mine in ketchup.
I say, “What are-“ because in America we are blessed with so many different foods to tempt our palate.
What is the most important thing about food for you besides or in spite of nutrition(ie liver) If you are like me you said, “Taste.” The taste must be savory or we probably won’t eat it no matter all the good intentions in the world.
I remember when my youngest son was little and I had some candy that I didn’t want to share. I would make a face and tell him it tasted bad. That worked for a few minutes, but he always caught on, and I ended up sharing. Being a Mom is hard work.
If you are on a diet food takes on a whole new meaning. It calls to you from your kitchen cabinets and refrigerator. It flirts with you on your television and beckons you when you drive down the road. The grocery store becomes a war zone of forbidden foods just inches away.
I don’t think anyone likes to diet. Why? Because while your waistline may thank you your taste buds are screaming deprivation.
And eat we must for our continued health and well being. Our growling, grumbling, stomachs will not let us alone for long.
Did you know that just like your physical person your spiritual person needs to be fed?
While we grow fat and contented on the outside our inner person can be shriveled and starved if we’re not careful to feed it.
Why does that matter? Ever get really grouchy when your blood sugar is low because you need to eat? That is what happens inside when our spiritual person is deprived of food. It gets moody and grouchy and angry and we do and say things that we later regret. We miss blessings God wants to heap upon us because we are not in a place where we can receive it. If we don’t make ourselves available to partake of food than we starve ourselves of nutrition we need to be strong and function well. The same goes for God’s Word. If we never stop to take time to feed upon it our spiritual man will become weak.
Maybe you take time regularly to feed on God’s Word and savor every morsel that it has to offer.
Or perhaps it’s like when you were a kid and Mom insisted you eat those vegetables that did not look so appetizing so you avoided them like the plague.
But did you ever have the experience that when you finally gave in and tasted them that you liked them? I bet you did at least once. The point is you did not know if it had a savory taste or not until you tried it.
Job said in 23:12—“I esteemed the Words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” The Psalmist cries out “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Ps.119:103
Jesus says to you and me, “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger.” John 6:34
So today when you sit down to that wonderful meal and begin to enjoy let it be a reminder of the other food you need to partake of as well.
“O taste and see that the Lord is good.” Psalm 34: 8
“For all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.’ II Timothy 3:16,17
This reminds me of a hymn in our hymnal—“Come and Dine”
“Jesus has a table spread where the saints of God are fed,
He invites His chosen people come and dine.
With His manna He doth feed and provides our every need.
Come and dine the Master calleth; come and dine.
You may feast at Jesus table all the time------“
John 21:12
