closer to the edge, with
eternity a question tucked
away and put to bed, by
majorities of people who don’t
even know their dead, won’t you
help us, Holy Spirit, start to care and
reach for them. Instead of
sitting on the sidelines counting
people in our pews, charting
trends and demographics, watching
souls slip down and through, all our
cracks and our divisions, our
dogmatic points of view, oh won’t you
help us, Holy Spirit, plug the gaps and
catch a few. instead of
filling holes with stained glass that
obscures our eyes from seeing all the
emptiness outside our walls, the
broken and the bleeding, while we
take a vote to find out who
among us should be leading the next
bake sale or revival, who is
capable of heeling dwindling
numbers that encumber our
ability to grow into the
biggest church in town, we must
exceed the status quo, we must
bring in the coffee bars the atm’s, the
broadway shows, before we
find ourselves passé, or worse, no
longer in the know. we must be
relevant and vibrant, drawing
masses through our doors, so we can
feed ourselves on plenty while we
starve the lost, the poor, oh
Holy Spirit reach into our hearts, shine
light on our affairs, so we can
see we’ve missed the point if even
one soul still despairs. help us
reach for more than numbers, help us
touch lives overlooked, instead of
keeping noses buried in our
hymnals and our books, help us
see the hopeless state in which
so many people live, please help us
kick our church doors open, step outside and
live for Him, for only Him.
