As he sat on his young father's knee,
“The preacher said we would get gifts from God.
Do you know what He’s giving to me?”
“Well, Denny Boy, I do not know yet
What the Father is planning to give.
It won’t be a toy, though, all wrapped up,
But a way that He wants you to live.
“The same great God who had known ahead
Of the folks who would follow His lead
Has chosen a talent to fit everyone
That is just what each person will need.
“He then sent His Spirit to carry to them
The enablement so that they could do
The duties that He’d set before them
And the power to carry them through.
“The dear Lord might give you a calling to preach,
To a people where you will be sent,
Or maybe He’ll keep you with us here at home
To be blessed as an encouragement.
“It could be you're gifted to lead or to teach,
Or you may have some funds you should share.
You might be the one who could see prophecy
Or show mercy or have faith in prayer.
“I do know the gift God will give you
Is the very one that you would choose.
You’ll be a fine man in the kingdom of God,
And your talents our Savior will use.”
“Well, thank you, Dad, for the stuff you said,
Though it’s more than I wanted to know.
So can we go fishing on some day soon
Like you’ve promised me that we would go?”

I wonder if the 4th verse might be a bit advanced for the audience?
The last stanza is just the right touch.
