I knew this would be a special New Year’s Eve, because I knew that Grandma might not live to see the next one. I cared for her on this shift as she battled the horrid cancer that ravaged her body. She seemed to grow weaker each day. But her spirit was always upbeat. It was good to be with her.
I looked at the clock…7:00 p.m. I wondered what my husband, John, was doing. I knew my friends were gathering for a night of games, so I hoped he would join them and not sit at home alone.
The doorbell rang. Who could that be at this time? No one ever came to visit after 6 p.m. I’m in my jammies! So I wrapped my blanket around me and peeked out the window. There was John and my friends singing Christmas carols at the door…smiling and waving. Our dog, Sam, was even with them making tail angels in the snow as he was so happy to be a part of this group.
Grandma, who didn’t like to miss anything, wondered what was going on. I told her there were carolers at the door. She wanted to see. So I helped her out of her chair and held her around the waist at the door. They called, “Happy New Year!” to her. She smiled, laughed and waved at the crazy group.
After a couple more carols, everyone came into the house. Grandma had never had anyone come to sing to her before. She, and I, were especially blessed that New Year’s Eve. Through the hardships of cancer, God showed His extra special love that night through some special people.
For the rest of the week, anyone who called Grandma or stopped by for a visit heard about our surprise New Year’s carolers. What a boost of encouragement that surprise was for both of us as we faced the coming year. I knew God would walk with us, and not leave us on our own.
