“Good morning, Vicar,” replied Lisbet, reaching a hand out to gently shake his. “I wish to thank you for the Bible which you gave me.” Her smile faded as she added, “I am most sorry to state, however, that my dear husband does not share our view about the Lord Jesus.”
“Now, my dear, your husband is a learned man,” the vicar said softly as he patted Lisbet’s hand. “And, he is of the Jewish faith, so you must not argue with him. Just be a good wife, and a good mother, and God will bless you, my child.”
Tears sprang to Lisbet’s eyes. “I wish for God to bless my husband, as well, Vicar.” She encouraged Steffan to search for some interesting leaves, and then continued. “I have heard so many disturbing reports on the wireless – reports about Adolph Hitler and the rules he has been imposing against those of Jewish heritage. It is hard not to be afraid. He has already invaded Poland; what if the Germans invade Denmark? I am most afraid of what could happen to my husband Jakob, and to Steffan.”
The vicar frowned. Finally he spoke: “My dear, are you still laboring on the special project that you feel God instructed you to work on?”
“Yes, I finished the secret passageway yesterday,” she answered.
“If, heaven forbid, the Nazis do invade, you must utilize it. You would not be safe if you came here, as I hear Hitler is targeting the church, as well. However, if you go along the river, you will come upon a red barn. In the corner of the horse stall, hidden under the hay, you will find a box. In it are instructions for you to eventually find safe passage-way to either England or America, itself. Do you understand what I am saying to you?”
Overcome by emotion, Lisbet’s embrace acknowledged her understanding. Steffan bounded back to his mother to show her the leaves he acquired. She waved good-by to the vicar as she walked homeward with her son.
When Lisbet arrived home, she was surprised to see Jakob sitting in a chair, smoking his pipe. “My darling, is everything alright?” she asked.
He didn’t answer her question, but instead said, “My dear, I must say that I was angry at first when you told me that you were taking walks past the vicarage, and then I personally was furious when you stated that you accepted Jesus as your savior.”
She nodded her head in remembrance of the argument that ensued when she told him of her choice to serve Jesus.
“Even then, “he continued, “I never stopped loving you; actually, you became a better wife, if that was possible.” He paused to take a puff on his pipe. He raked his hands across his raven black hair, and stated, “Then, when you said that God, Himself told you to create a secret hiding place and passageway, I was afraid for your mental capacity. In spite of my scoffing, you still served both God, as well as me. Your actions have spurred me on to ask you a question,” Jakob gently touched Lisbet’s face as he asked, “My love, how do I accept this Jesus as my Messiah?”
Lisbet started crying as she led her husband to the Lord in prayer. He embraced her gently, and then, with a concerned voice, stated, “My dear, I am most fearful to tell you that the Germans have invaded Denmark, and the Nazi’s are particularly interested in me, because of my scientific work. So, we must utilize your hide-away.”
She nodded in understanding and quickly prepared for the journey that would await them. At the very moment that they safely closed themselves up in the secret hiding place, the Nazis crashed through their front door. As Jakob, Lisbet and Steffan held onto each other, Lisbet felt a peace envelope her; even though she did not know what tomorrow would bring, she knew that God would somehow protect them.
