I joined the group of vivacious laughter, eager to share in the conversation. Three lovely ladies were discussing teens who had strayed, and as this was actually in my wheelhouse as a mental health professional, I felt like I had something worthy to say.
“It’s often due to something in their home life”…I began before I was quickly and loudly cut off by the tall one who shook fiery crimson curls aggressively. “No! Not at my church where I know their families.”
She turned from me, nodding authoritatively at the other two, who smiled adoringly at her, completely dismissing my meager contribution to the discussion.
Feeling overlooked and unimportant, I shrank away sadly, feeling like a flea in the Amazon. Since turning fifty, I began to feel a tangible loneliness that I fought like a shroud. I felt like everything I said or did went unnoticed by others—-trivialized to a mere vapor. Was I becoming ghostlike? ‘Here I am!’ I wanted to shout; but of course I didn’t.
With so many distractions and competing noises overwhelming me, I was pushed into silent desperation. I had attempted to be present and engage with others, but still felt like the last person chosen for the losing team.
Like the widow that Elijah was sent by the Lord to save from starvation and with dwindling hope, I sought the Lord. (1Kings 17:8-16) NIV
I cried out to El Roi-“the God who sees me.” There is no-one invisible to the Lord. No-one escapes His gaze. Always aware of my situation and pain, He came to my defense.
The Holy Spirit whispered an eternal vision that God sees me when no-one else does. He has never lost sight of me and has chosen me. (Ephesians 1:4-5) NIV. I realized that it was me who had lost sight of what truly matters in life. God has gifted each of us with skills to fulfill our purpose while here on Earth, and we should not hide them regardless of how others discount our contributions. (Romans 8:6)
We are never forsaken by God.
As I began to worship the invisible God, King of the Universe, my strength was renewed and my faith was kindled wholeheartedly.
Hebrews 11:1 says “To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see.”
I decided to rely on the Lord’s faithfulness to open my eyes and flood my heart with light in order to experience God’s great power working through me.
“Blessed are the pure in heart for thy will see God.” (Matthew 5:8)
I aspire to be seen like King David …"a person after God's own heart." (Acts 13:22)
Even as I write this, He see me…"as the apple of His eye.” (Psalm17)
