My friend, Patrick and I, formed a band. Just the two of us. He played the accordion and I was on drums. One Friday evening, we were driving to another city to perform for a wedding engagement. Patrick drove his car and I was driving mine behind him. The drums take up a lot of space.
I wasn't a season driver. I got the bright idea, to show Patrick how well I could drive. On the back country road, in the middle of passing him, I ran out of straight road that turned into a curve. A policeman on a motorcycle was driving on the curve and headed straight for me. At the very last second, avoiding collision, the constable drove his bike off the road and into the ditch.
Fear took over! Driving as fast as my four wheels could take me. I thought I could escape. With nowhere to go, I past Patrick, now I was in the lead. I watched in my rearview mirror the constable turn around, siren blaring, chasing after me.
Thank goodness my thoughts corrected themselves. I pulled over, on the shoulder of the road. The policeman was shook up, to say the least and very angry. I was in big trouble! Patrick then joined the scene, trying to explain to the Officer why I did, what I did. His thoughts were not well received.
"You realize, careless driving, I could take away your license immediately!" As he gave me a deserved warning, a court date and a huge fine pending.
Finally the court day arrived. I was standing before my favourite person Judge O'Brien, my best friend’s father. He allowed me to explain my situation and I was hoping for clemency.
"Young lady, you broke the law. No excuse will change what you did.” He explained with a stern smile. He gave me a wink with his right eye and handed me the fine. To be paid immediately.
I was the last name on the docket. Judge O'Brien took off his robe and laid it over the back of his chair and put on his street jacket.
"Rebecca, can I walk with you to the cashier?" He asked with a smile.
"Yes, I delightfully responded.” I always enjoyed talking with Lizzy's father.
We chatted happily, as we left the court room and walked down the hall to the cashier. Judge O'Brien took out his chequebook and paid in full my $500 fine.
Lizzy's father gave me a big hug. “Please drive carefully.”
All through my life, I have wondered why judge O'Brien was so kind.
