The Prime Minister, honorable P.J. Patterson one of the spectators who was caught up in the euphoria congratulated them and placed the icing on the cake.
“This is undoubtedly the greatest day in Jamaica’s sporting history.” He said.
He then declared a public holiday on the following day in celebration of the Reggae Boyz’s victory.
Car horns honked, headlights flashed, and the Jamaican flags were hurled throughout the land. It was as though the entire nation had the greatest party!
The following day an Act to make provision for the commemoration of the historic achievement of the Jamaican National football team in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup Finals was passed. Both houses of Parliament passed the bill without amendment.
According to one journalist, “both houses displayed a rare unity.”
The nation was no different. Everyone seemed to be “waiting in the wings” to come out in praise for Reggae Boyz’s gallant championship!
This became evident when another history was made as Police reported that there was no criminal activity during this glorious period.
Gone was the scrutiny, of their every move. The criticisms were now turned to praises. The administrators, the Technical Director, Renee Simoes, and others have now gained new statuses. The players were all now elevated to heroes.
This harmonious relationship can be likened to a watershed period. This feat allowed Jamaica to be the first English-speaking Caribbean Island to qualify for entry to the World cup. In addition, to be placed with the thirty-one other nations.
A new day came. All boys on the corner who plays football can now hope to become a representative for Jamaica.
As a Jamaican, I witnessed and participated in this rich and rewarding experience which, I think is relatable to what the Psalmist penned:
“Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalms 133:1(KJV)
