‘’Eureka!’’, exclaimed Isaac Newton, after discovering the law of gravity. Likewise, my ‘’eureka’’ moment, is this week. ‘’Matching people and phenomena is a perfect match, a divine game!’’
‘’Let’s make man, in our image, in our likeness…’’, God said. Gen. 1:26-31. [NIV].
‘’So God created man, in his own image…’’ and gave him all the resources he had just created and corresponding authority to ‘’subdue the earth.’’
God continuously perfected, monitored and evaluated his thing. On the fifth day, his assessment was: ‘’God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.’’ Gen. 1:31. Do you remember those moments when your teacher gave you the ‘’very good’’ rating that likened your performance to his expectations? Even the Trinity did it the way teachers do. Aren’t they God’s replicas?
God was not yet done. ‘’It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’’ Gen. 2:18. While Adam was made from dust, Eve was made from a refined rib. When Adam saw her, he joyously appreciated a perfectly matched, suitable wife, setting a serious divine precedent: ‘’For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and they will become one flesh.’’ Gen. 2:24.
Before I left my parents, to comply with God’s decree, I had one big challenge. My lofty ideal wife standards! A few were specific: education, height, colour… but the majority were nebulously at the level of my sub-consciousness.
I would meet ladies in my social circles and immediately dismiss each one for one vain reason or other. This went on for a long time. Soon a specific pattern crystalized. Those that easily qualified to be on my candidate list, I was not on their candidate lists which was unexpectedly frustrating. That ruined my abnormal pride. Time came when I had an empty list and a few purposeless fellow sinner-mates.
As the clock of life ticked on and on, I saw all my contemporaries getting married. I wondered and worried how normal men made marriage decisions. Some, obviously, made blunders and I never wanted to fall in the same trap.
One night, in 1977-78, I was studying abroad, I experienced traumatic loneliness. This new feeling intensified. A new dead end! For the first time, the need for marriage to a suitable wife dawned upon me. I realized that my wife-standards, were, probably, mere excuses. I needed a suitable wife. But my ideal wife candidate list was empty! And in a foreign land.
I finished my studies and returned home. One evening, I hosted a few of my male friends at Sheraton Hotel.
‘’Robert, do you see that group of ladies, seated on a table over there?’’ Jimmy asked me. ‘’There are two beautiful university students who are good prospects,’’ he opined. I concurred. We discussed the subject and agreed that we should move cautiously to avoid unwarranted mistakes. Jimmy knew their hall of residence at the university.
Later, we visited the two ladies’ Hall. Through our network we had gathered more details. Unfortunately, they were absent.
Around that time, a friendly couple invited me for lunch. There was another guest. The moment I saw her, I liked her with a liking I had ever had before. My ideal wife standards flashed on my mind which instantly started ticking each standard, one by one, including the nebulous ones hidden at the subconscious level. By the time the preliminary pleasantries were finished, my mind was getting comfortable.
‘’Robert, this is Celia, a friend and relative of Jolly, my wife.’’
‘’Celia, this is Robert, a friend and my O.B at School.
It was a memorable lunch. Ben and Jolly were wonderful hosts. Celia was a miracle match. It was pure love at first sight. Period! The conversations were convivial, moderated by Ben and Jolly. From this fellowship, I gathered more information about Celia. I processed every detail. All my expectations were met and exceeded beyond all human expectations.
Later, I visited Celia, at her Hall of residence. Miraculously, it was the same room I and Jimmy had visited but bounced!
On 20 September 1980 we wedded at All Saints Church and Ben was my best-man. This year is our 41st Wedding Anniversary of the most miraculously matched couple the world has ever seen. We are blessed with three daughters and two sons [one deceased] and five grandchildren and more yet to come, by God’s grace.
