“Living in a closed Eastern culture provided such safety but some limits abound” was a frequent thought in Anna’s mind. She was thirty, single and had never married. Her parents were long gone. She used to be known locally as a kind, happy, honest hard working person but lately she had become a recluse. There were religious reasons for her secluded life. She had an issue related to blood. Physicians could not help women like her so they existed in the shadows.
In defiance, a new neighbor named Hannah came to visit.
“Why do we never see you at Temple?” she asked kindly.
Anna patiently explained to her friend the reason for her shame. I cannot stop bleeding. It is a curse and I am so ashamed” she said between tears. “My dream is to be made well and live a normal life again.''
“The women of my family all had it,” she said. “Mama died from it.” However, Hannah did come visiting again. She said “I have been warned by the good people of the town.”
When a woman had an issue of blood it hampered social interactions. To avoid people, Anna went to the well when there were few people about. She grew her own food so that she did not have to go to market like other women.
On the rare occasions that she went out, she kept her head down and avoided looking at anyone.
One day Hannah came in, all excited.
“Anna, have you heard of Messiah?” she asked. “He was prophesied by the prophet Isaiah and was born here in our town.”
“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14 KJV)”
Anna admitted “ Yes, I was told of his coming by Papa.”
Hannah said “Rumour has it that the Messiah is here now! All the priests talk about Him. He is a rabbi unlike all others. He and his followers has been to other villages and towns talking with people, healing the sick, delivering the demonised and just being with the people.”
“I have not seen Him but I am willing to be healed.” Anna said quietly with hope in her heart and a glow in her eyes.
So secretly she came up with a plan. She kept her ears and eyes open for talk of his visit. One day she heard he was out walking around so she did what she always did. She dressed in subdued colours and slowly merged into the distracted crowd. She thought to herself,
“If I could get close to Him and touch his clothes, I will be healed. I just know it!”
“Just then a woman who had hemorrhaged for twelve years slipped in from behind and lightly touched his robe. She was thinking to herself, “If I can just put a finger on his robe, I’ll get well.” Jesus turned—caught her at it. Then he reassured her: “Courage, daughter. You took a risk of faith, and now you’re well.” The woman was well from then on.” {Matthew 9:20-22}.
Anna was healed that day. Her life changed forever. It became well known that Jesus had healed her. No longer was she shunned. Her dream had come through.
