His family was upset with him and refused to pay for funeral, sign for cremation, or the embalming. Funeral place then took the body in the coffin, placed him on the front porch of his girl friend’s house. Of course, camera crews didn’t take long to hear about this story. No one would take responsibility for the man’s body, passing the buck, or in this case passing the “coffin.”
That would be a trip out to pick up the newspaper you wouldn’t forget. This is an extreme example of passing the buck, but it happens all the time. Our society has changed so that no one accepts responsibility for anything. This man had caused so much conflict with his family and in the end, no one wanted to pay the expenses of a burial. Another man faced conflict, but quite in the same way.
No one wanted to take responsibility for the verdict, or judgment made on Jesus even when they found He had done nothing wrong. Jesus had only done things that reflected His Father. He brought no shame. He was Truth, but Truth in a sinful world was not recognized. It is so foreign to most that it is difficult to identify.
When time came to determine the punishment for Jesus, High Priests, Herod, and Pilate had a different take on it. The 2 High Priests just wanted Him dead, Herod wanted a miracle, and Pilate washed His hands literally, passing the buck; symbolism for not taking responsibility for what would be the fate of this man. All had a chance to stop it so all are just as guilty.
The people crying “crucify Him” played a part as Christ took on the sins of the world that day. We may not have been there yelling those very words, but our sins were just as visible and painful for Him as He took the past, present, and future generations with Him, nailing their sins to the Cross.
The boldness of the people to yell out, “His blood be on us and on our children,” still leaves me with chills. All responsible for the death of Christ; no washing hands will take that away, and no passing the buck as the case of the coffin for a doorstop.
Father,
My sins took your Son to that cruel Cross; where the tempest of sins destruction rages beyond comprehension. Even now words are hard to describe the awesomeness of what Your Son did for me and anyone who would accept your forgiveness of sin. Thank you! Precious Savior.
…Matthew 27:23-25 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us and on our children.
