My, oh my, what a wonderful day.
Plenty of sunshine headed my way,
I'm a music lover. When I'm sad, depressed, or just plain grumpy, I listen to my favorite motivational songs. An old favorite of mine is "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah." Can you see Uncle Remus, a plump black man who sings about how wonderful the day is among his animated forest friends? It is an honest approach to teaching what’s right in a friendly way; a catchy tune, don’t you think?
Music transports me to a different level of consciousness. As I focus on the lyrics, rhythm, and delightful harmonies that Disney-type songs produce, I am moved by the sounds—some are jovial, others serious, yet all inspires something in me. I can envision the song writers’ hard work—they weave their magic into prize-winning masterpieces.
Some songs leave me with a ‘flutter in my belly feeling’ like "You Can Fly," from Peter Pan. I drift back to my childhood as my sister and I pretend we are on a flight to Neverland with Peter, Wendy, Michael, and John. And we cannot forget, Tinkerbell. I think of a happy thought and begin to fly, as Peter points out in the movie…"All it takes is faith and trust, and a little bit of pixie dust."
A foot-stomping favorite is "Hakuna Matata" from the Lion King. Remember the beat? It’s unforgettable. I’m ready to hunt down that movie just to sing along. After all, "Hakuna Matata means no worries for the rest of your life." Who doesn’t want that kind of lifestyle!
Another quick tempo piece is from Disney’s Jungle Book. “The Bare Necessities" song, is a delightful reminder to appreciate the simple things in life. Baloo and Mowgli dance in the jungle discovering nature’s buffet of bananas, ants, and prickly pears! They certainly were carefree and jungle-free!
Get ready to put on a Cinderella gown, and take a few swirls around the dance floor. "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes," leaves us with a floating sensation as we learn to have faith in our dreams so “rainbows will come smiling through." While dreaming, we can also "Wish Upon a Star, for it makes no difference who you are!”
Grab a close buddy, and sing along with the Toy Story favorite, "You've Got a Friend in Me." You can almost hear it, can't you? Put yourself in Andy’s and Woody's situation--reminisce about the good old days. And while your friend is with you, maybe he can help with your chores and "Whistle While You Work!"
Even heartfelt melodies beyond Disney overwhelm me, as I listen to Celine Dion's beautiful rendition from the movie Titanic…" My Heart Will Go On." It takes my breath away. Her delicate voice surrounded by a myriad of backup voices and full orchestra can release any tension for the rest of the day.
Josh Groban's "Raise Me Up," gives us a unique connection and love with God. Each listener is able to grasp an inner spirituality and strength that permeates one’s soul. This close-to-the-heart ballad makes me believe I can stand on mountains or walk on stormy seas!
We can "Heal the World," as Michael Jackson performs, or become a "Hero" with Mariah Carey’s eight octave range voice.
Whatever the song, we can listen with joyful tears, or tap our feet with renewed energy. We can close our eyes and imagine a world of peace and tranquility, or fall on our knees in worship to our loving God. Whatever we experience, it is a time for us to relax, and let the caresses of music tickle our senses and saturate our imaginations.
