When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane before being arrested and crucified, the Bible tells us that he experienced much anguish and sorrow to the point of sweating blood. Consider the following accounts of Jesus’ suffering:
Matthew 26: 37-39
He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and watch with me.” Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Mark 14: 33-36
He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will but what you will.”
Luke 22: 41-44
He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
According to the Gospel of Matthew, three times while praying in the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus asked that his burden be removed from him, yet three times he submitted to the will of the Father. I don’t know about you, but as I reflect upon these verses I can hear Jesus saying, “Father, I want to finish this, but I can’t do it in my own strength.”
When we think that we can’t possibly go on, and no one understands our pain, let’s draw near to the one who truly knows every emotion we feel. When Jesus drew his last breath and said, “It is finished,” he provided the only way for us to be victorious in our battles.
Jesus, it is easy for us to get caught up in our pain and suffering and forget that nothing we experience compares to the sacrifice you made for us. Thank you for submitting to your Father, and drawing on his strength to fulfill the call on your human life. Help us to be like the apostle Paul so that like him we can say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
