“Hahahahoheeha!” was the uproarious laugh of my companion. Tears trickled down his cheeks he was laughing so hard.
“WHAT’S so funny?” was my immediate response, feeling a bit left out. I wanted to know so I could laugh, too.
His face scrunched into a twisted smile, “It’s those earthlings. They are SO like sheep.”
“Well, what’s new about that? Didn’t Jesus say….”
“STOP!” DON’T MENTION THAT NAME IN MY PRESENCE!”
Wow, what a change in the twinkling of an eye. From hilarious laughter and diabolical mirth to cruel, evil, glowering hate.
“Calm down, Lucifer, You’re going to bust a blood vessel.”
“Not likely. I don’t have any blood vessels.”
“Oh, yea,” I agreed. “You still haven’t told me what’s so funny.”
“Earthlings. They think they are so smart, but I can deceive them by barely trying.” Lucifer tossed his head arrogantly. “All I need do is take the Word of the guy up above, change it a little, or add or subtract a word….and most people fall for my lies without giving it a thought. Or….I have someone with a ‘big’ name by earthly judgment make a nice-sounding statement and it is quoted in churches everywhere, never mind that it is in direct opposition to His word. What FUN to make His people fall flat on their ignorant, spiritual faces!”
“Lucifer, what have you been up to now?” I asked, genuinely wanting to know how he so easily deceives.
“Just like Eve, I plant in their young minds the idea that they are really going to miss out on a wonderful experience if they don’t shoot up some cocaine; or they are just an old fogey if they don’t have sex whenever and with whomever they please…I have a young wife’s friend encourage her to get a divorce because the guy up there will understand even though He said He hates divorce. After all, He wants her to be happy, and she deserves to be happy. Then, I close her mind to listening to anyone who will point her to the book that has His words…I get scientific people to say the tiny living being within a mother’s womb is nothing. NOTHING but insignificant tissue that can easily be thrown away. Oh, I really enjoy getting the earthlings to destroy that wonderful, new and living miracle from the guy above. I have so many ways to deceive God’s earthlings, and all the time I’m gaining more and more of the them for MY glory. Why shouldn’t I laugh? I am the Father of Lies, the Diabolical Deceiver, the Champion of Disguises.“ Lucifer struts about, his mouth twisted in an evil sneer. “Those I deceive see me first as gentle as a lamb, and by the time they realize I am a hungry lion ready to destroy them, it is too late. Hahahahahaha……”
As Lucifer drifts further into the darkness, his laughter rings ominously in my ears. Then….there is silence, followed by a brilliant light and from far away comes the words of Him whose name Lucifer will not speak: “Be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith…. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. To Him be dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”*
I am reminded of an old adage we don’t hear much anymore: “He who laughs last laughs the loudest.” Much of this earthly life is uncertain, but one thing I know: our great and glorious God will laugh last and loudest when His Son returns to Heaven with His beautiful and faithful Bride.
