His mom often told him that if he just tried to go outside at night he would see lots more than just darkness. She told him that God had made the day and night and both were beautiful and full of amazing things but Phil didn’t believe her. He thought that scary things hid in the dark waiting to frighten fireflies like him. Of course that wasn’t true – no, Phil’s mom was right, night time was amazing.
Then one day Phil had simply had enough. He was tired of having all his firefly friends tease him and he was just plain tired of being scared! He decided to get on his knees and pray to Jesus.
“Dear Jesus,” he prayed, “Please make me bold so that I can face the darkness even though I’m scared.”
That afternoon he told his parents he needed their help. When the sun finally went down Phil’s mom and dad took hold of his hands and together they flew into the night. At first Phil kept his eyes tightly shut until his mom squeezed his hand and whispered,
“Look!”
He couldn’t believe his eyes. Hundreds of fireflies were buzzing around and all of them were glowing. Suddenly the night didn’t seem so dark, instead it looked beautiful.
“Can I do that?” Phil asked his mom when he saw that she was glowing too.
“Yes, of course you can. God knew that fireflies needed to be out at night so he gave us his amazing light to help us see in the darkness!”
“Wow, God really thought of everything.”
There were other lights that Phil discovered that night. He saw the moon for the first time, all round and bright and he also saw thousands of stars that twinkled from the sky. He couldn’t believe that he had missed out on all those beautiful things just because he was scared.
Before he went to bed that night, Phil got on his knees to pray again but this time he thanked God for bringing amazing light into the world!
