Fighting a cold, I began to experience a constant runny nose. Silly me happened to sit on the front pew of the church where I normally find myself, to leave seats open in the back of the auditorium. Our work in Brazil was thriving so the meeting place was filled to capacity.
I vaguely remember that the preaching had begun that morning, and I was trying to figure out what to do about my nose; no long sleeve to use, not in this tropical weather. What was I to do? How would I speak to visitors with this faucet opened full force?
Thinking quickly, I asked “Bobby” our four year old to go to the back of the auditorium to the bathroom to obtain a piece of toilet paper which would do for now. He would be smaller and less noticeable than me, compared to tall American going to the back.
I was listening, only half concentrated on the message, and half on the thoughts of “where is my son?” He should have been back by now. Turning half in my pew to try to spot his whereabouts, my jaw dropped at what I saw parading carefully and quietly like I asked. “Bobby” looked like a delayed, slow motion ring bearer. With giant steps he carefully and oh so slowly, as instructed, made no sound as he approached the half way mark to the front.
In his hand he held high in banner style, white toilet paper four foot long. The toilet paper was waving in the air like a kite as if to say “I am here, can everyone see me?” Laughter began to spread through the auditorium like a contagious disease.
My husband the preacher, stopped his sermon to appreciate or not, the moment. He just stood shaking his head in dismay as the laughter increased with his halting his thoughts for the day. Our children were April and Bobby were loved by the Brazilians and only found humor that day in “Bobby’s” actions.
Bobby curled up next to me, crouched in under my arm, and wondered why everyone was laughing and staring at him. We don’t let Sergeant Levergood forget this incident as he holds the banner high serving in the United States Air force. See, he was just practicing the future carrying of our flag in service to God and Country.
It’s alright Sergeant Levergood, raise that red and white banner as high as you want!
