We know that Jesus paid the price for our sins when he died on the cross on Calvary.
Some of us acknowledge the season of Lent, which we are in now. Matthew 27 tells us what happened that day at Calvary. And most of us will read the events that occurred and led to that day in our daily devotions.
In Matthew 27:27-31:
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
28 And they stripped him and put on him a scarlet robe.
29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
They mockingly justified him as who he was, with the reed as a symbol of justice. He was referred to as the King of the Jews from the beginning of his Life.
The reed is also known as a symbol of authority and power to the Jews.
Jesus said, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me, (John 14:6). And they hated the Truth, for he spoke with authority and exposed their hypocrisy. So, they conspired to kill him.
In verse 30, And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
It must have been hard for His disciples to look at the scenes and see Jesus in these wicked men's hands. They felt helpless and sad, for they had seen him in power and now in weakness. Oh, how he suffered and died!
They had witnessed him raise the dead. They had seen him heal the sick, bring sight to the blind, and the lame walk again. They couldn't comprehend what was happening before them.
They had forgotten what he had told them that he came to die for the sins of the world, and on the third day, he would raise from the grave, and death will lose its power and the grave its victory.
And on Easter morning, he did as he said he would do. He rose triumphantly from the grave and lives forever.
And now we are free from sin!
