Jesus left Jericho and was on His way to Jerusalem for the Passover. Through His journey, people from all walks of life began to follow Him. As the crowd increased, the atmosphere became noisy. Some were shouting, "Hosanna, Hosanna to the prophet of Galilee!" Others were making fun of Him, and some screamed, "You are nothing but a fake!"
It must have been a spring morning early in April just at the east side of the gate of Jericho where the beggars would be. They must be there early when the merchants are going to the markets or their places of business. They would give the beggars a coin as they passed by.
Blind Bartimaeus was a beggar and was late to get his coin. He dreamt that he could see all night, so he woke up late. He was late going to the roadside to beg. When he got there, most of the beggars had left, having received their alms for the day. Blind Bartimaeus was so sad that he was late because he would not have anything to take home for his family. The merchants had already passed to go to the market.
He sat at the roadside and began to cry. Then he remembered his dream, and his tears subsided. He started to think about it, and he got excited. Then he said to himself, "It is just a dream…." It was so real in his mind; he could not escape it. He still tried not to think about it, but he could not stop. "I wished it could be real," he cried. Then the Bible stories his mother used to tell him when he was a child came to mind. He remembered she said that the Messiah would come and do miracles one day. That He would heal the sick, open the eyes of the blind, and set the captives free. Blind Bartimaeus longed to see the Messiah.
He continued thinking about his dream and got lost in his thoughts when he heard a noise. He jumped out of his daydreaming and jumped up. "What is that noise?" he said to himself. People were shouting at him to move out of the way. A kind woman saw that he was blind and went to him and asked him how she could help him. He asked her what that noise was? She said, "Have you not heard that Jesus of Nazareth is passing by?" "Is He the Messiah that the Bible speaks about?" "Yes, she said, but it will be difficult for you to get to Him. The people are too many, and they are pushing, squeezing, and pressing each other."
It suddenly dawned on him that was the Messiah—the one his mother spoke about when he was a child. He recognized that that was his moment to be healed, and he shouted. "Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me!" The kind woman said to him, "He can't hear you, Sir." And a passerby said to him, "Shut up you beggar, how can He hear you?" But Blind Bartimaeus shouted the more. "Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy upon me." Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet. But the more he shouted. Then Jesus stopped and looked around and saw the blind man and commanded His disciples to bring him.
They called to the blind man and said, "Cheer up! He is calling you."
Jesus could not naturally hear him, but his faith stopped Him. Throwing his cloak away, blind Bartimaeus came to Jesus. "What do you want me to do?" Jesus asked him. The blind man answered, "That I may receive my sight." Jesus said, " Receive your sight, your faith has saved you." And immediately blind Bartimaeus received his sight and followed Jesus, glorifying God.
