There was a buzz of excitement in the halls of Socastee High School. On this day April 4th , 30 years ago a time capsule was buried in the middle of their football field. Today is the day that the graduating class of 2055 were going to dig it up to see what was left to them.
As the assembly bell rang all the students headed for the football field they were beside themselves wondering what could be in the capsule. Everyone, of course had their own opinion as to what they may see. They all found theirs seats as they waited patiently for the senior class to be seated on the field.
As the seniors marched in you could see that some were bringing in their own items to replace the ones in the 30 year old capsule left to them. They were going to rebury the capsule as a gift to the class of 2085. As the seniors took their places the Principle, faculty and Mayor of Socastee also took their places center field.
There were media cameras everywhere waiting to get every minute of the event on film. Not just local stations were there but national stations like Fox and CNN were there to capture the moment as well.
The large excavator driving out to where the capsule was buried, had everyone clapping and yelling with anticipation. As the excavator continued to dig, the students couldn’t stay seated, everyone wanted to get the first glimpse of the capsule. Finally there it was in the middle of the field, ready to be opened and explored.
The key to the capsule had been entrusted to the mayors office 30 years ago, he walked over handing the key to the principle. As they approached the capsule, all the students started to chant, open it, open it, open it!
The first item presented to the crowd was a Socastee flag with a picture of the senior class of 2025 on it. There was a newspaper clipping about that years state championship for Football. There were also several pieces of clothing showing the trend for 30 years ago that received a good among of laughs.
The class of 2055 continued checking out the items left to them and dropping off the items that had been approved to replace the ones that were in the capsule. The principle told students that the items would be on display in the auditorium later so everyone could get a closer look at them.
As the class President was starting to place their items in the capsule she noticed something in the corner that had not been seen by the others. She reached in to find a book that was worn, a sign that it had been read quite often. She tried to show it to the principle but he said just keep it, I am sure it was put in by mistake.
Sue, the girl that found the book, was very curious to see what it was about. As she lay in bed that night she picked up the book, it fell open to a page that had been highlighted and underlined in red
John 3:16 -“"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
What does that mean she thought ,Sue looked at the front of the book it said Holy Bible, she had never heard of this book. She decided to ask her mom if she knew anything about the book.
Her mom was shocked to see her with the Bible and scared. “Mom, what’s wrong you look like you have seen a ghost.”
“That book is forbidden to be seen or talked about in this country since I was a young girl.” Sue was confussed, “why would a book be banned “ she asked.
Her mother began to explain “There were peopled that based their whole life on the words in that book and lived by it. When the new world change took placed the Bible’s were burned and churches where the people gathered to study and pray were all thorn down.
Everyone was forbidden to speak of it or of God and if they did they would be punished or worse be put to death.
Sue, you must not tell anyone about this book, not one person.
Take it and read it secretly my daughter because you have not only found a buried book, you have truly found the most valuable treasure ever given to man. The book of life!”
