Walking along the beach early one morning, I noticed the straight and narrow tyre tracks of a vehicle, probably the local Sheriff checking out the area. I noticed how the tracks headed towards the horizon, and interestingly into the light of the rising sun reflected on the water. I knew I had to capture this in a photo as it reminded me of the narrow road that Jesus told us we would follow as His disciples.
I once walked the wide path. It is anything but straight. It is crooked and windy, and is deceptive in its ways. I thought it was an exciting way to live, taking risks that were damaging me, but so difficult to refuse. I chose to rebel against the right way, and for a long time this felt good, my friends walked this path, and I wanted to be accepted as part of their crowd.
Years later, I would find that the path was indeed crooked in its ways. My life was messed up, I had taken so many turns and twists down wrong ways, I couldn’t find the way out. Just like a maze, I turned this way and that, only to find myself in a darker place, up against a dead end.
I needed help to get off this path, but each attempt proved to be another crooked way, never leading me into light and freedom.
Then Jesus met me. He walked into my life and shone His light into my darkness, forgiving me for living life my way, guiding me onto His straight path, and into the light and love of His Presence.
Sometimes the narrow path is hard, and if you are like me we find ourselves tempted to step to the right or left, thinking the wider path may be easier to walk on for a while. Or we think we know best and go our own way, ending up in a mess. in His faithfulness, our Father assures us that if we turn to the right or left we will hear a voice telling us, ‘This is the way, walk in it’.
In His great care and love for us, He will not let us wander too far off the narrow way, for the widened walk is deceptive and will eventually lead us down the wrong and destructive ways that will harm us. We are like sheep that can so easily be led astray.
The beauty of the narrow path is that however hard it may seem at times, every day it leads us walking onwards straight into Eternity where we will see Jesus face to face. What a wonderful thought and encouraging incentive to stay on the straight and narrow path.
