I moved away for a while, but we still kept in touch. Sometimes she’d call me late at night in tears asking for prayer for whatever circumstance she was dealing with. I did the same. We’re those rare type of friends who can call each other after months of no communication and pick up right where we left off.
Several years ago, I moved back to my hometown and we became close again. We’d see each other here and there and we even occasionally attended the same church. One Wednesday night service this February, she asked for prayer.
“They think it might be cancer,” she said.
We prayed and the church prayed, but I didn’t think much of the situation. I had just seen another friend go through cancer treatment and she’s doing fine. And she wasn’t even a believer! Surely the outcome for this child of God would be the same, if not better.
Five months later, my friend is dying.
The diagnosis is a very rare form of inflammatory breast cancer. This type of breast cancer is aggressive and affects less than 75 women in the world; all from Africa, where she has done ministry, but wasn't born there. Because of its rare form, it is highly difficult to detect and diagnose. Sadly, once diagnosed, it is commonly already stage three or four. Currently, my friend is undergoing Chemotherapy and Radiation, but the cancer has spread throughout her body. I’ve been told this is worse than the worst case scenario.
The most heartbreaking part about all of this is that she is a single mother with a young special needs son.
We both know she has already been healed. Already, but not yet.
It’s about as clear as mud why this happened, and even more muddy whether God will grant a miracle. Why do some live and others die? How do some get healed and others live with infirmity?
“...He maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust (Matthew 5:45b, KJV).”
None of this makes sense, but God is Sovereign. His Will, however cloudy to our human eyes, is always perfect. Whether the manifestation of her healing comes quickly, as she and I have seen in so many others’ lives, or not until her resurrection as she is taken over the threshold into heaven by Jesus Himself, our God is good. His Word is true. His promises are “Yes” and “Amen,” and I will see my friend again.

She will be included in my prayers and on my prayer list.
May your friend find comfort in His word, and may His perfect peace be with her and her family and friends.
