Topic: CLEAR AS MUD (07/18/19)
Charlotte’s tears spilled onto her full pink cheeks. The water in her eyes magnified the street lights in the wee hours of the morning darkness. Disappointments crowded her soul and faith seemed very low. Overwhelming thoughts of failure attempting to put out her faith, Charlotte felt her heart resign to never seeing a brighter tomorrow, or a mediocre future at best. She had made too many mistakes the past year. Not so serious if looked at one by one, but the cumulative affect made her blind to hope, much less having faith for change.

Life had brought challenging changes. Charlotte had always prayed and overcome the shocks of life. Fatigue, though, reigned in her now. Night after night she was compelled to rest and watch reruns of a favorite cop series on TV. A few times over the course of a month, after each work day, she had tried to rally herself up from her comfy chair and win over her defeats, but the effort was inconsistent. Then suddenly, driving to work this Monday morning she remembered mercy in the mud, it had happened before.

The thoughts raced through Charlotte’s mind. She longed to write them down, but the drive prevented it. The sword of God’s Truth she had hidden in her heart beginning at age eleven, was rising up in her. She felt her mind clearing up.

Charlotte repeated the words in her heart out loud: “let mercy work when faith fails.” The thought pricked her heart. How could she feel such overwhelming defeat? She had forgotten mercy! When you’ve been through a war, and you’re down for the count, there is still another attribute of God she could count on.

Thoughts of mercy filled her when she realized the war she had been in for awhile had caused battle fatigue. No amount of rest had alleviated her troubles, until now. Charlotte felt hope, faith, and energy filling her. She was seeing through the mud!

You did an excellent job of drawing me in from the beginning and keeping my attention to the end. You are very good writer. Well done!

You have the start of a good story here. I want to know more- why is the MC so broken up? You need more showing than telling to bring this alive. Have Charlotte, herself explain her pain, such as crying out to God. Demonstrate the tears flowing, Give examples of the defeats in her life. Bring your character to life and show us why she is is so much pain. You have what it takes to be a good writer - keep it up!
