Topic: JAM (02/09/17)
Have you ever felt like toe-jam on the journey of life? You are there, but not really noticed. You exist, but are not truly recognized. You occupy space, but don’t really serve a purpose. Maybe you even feel like the dirty by-product of someone else’s ambitious, selfish toes. To be honest, I have felt this way. Normal, average, and unremarkable at best; cruddy, superfluous, or discarded at worst.

A classic example: I don’t’ know how many times I have been at a family reunion, especially as a preteen, and heard the words after introducing myself, “Oh…I guess I didn’t know you existed.” Again, “I didn’t know you existed.” Words to cheer the heart, no? But when you are number three out of four or even more kids, it is easy to get lost in the shuffle.

The other day I was reading in 1st Corinthians 12 about the parts of the body – our physical body, and the spiritual body of Christ. We all know the verse about each part being necessary to the body’s functioning. Not meaning any disrespect, but it has almost become cliché. (Not because it should be, but because I have made it that way.) I have heard that and I know it mentally. However, it can be difficult to allow that truth to penetrate my heart.

But, on the other hand, there is a verse that is not quite so commonly quoted: “And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment.” (1st Cor. 12:23-24, NIV) Yes, we take special care to cloth the parts that are private. At first glance, this may not seem like much of a consolation. “Oh, you mean they have to cover me up because I am unpresentable?” Well, try thinking about it like this: If a person left the house without taking special care to cloth his/her personally sensitive parts of the body, would there be repercussions? Aside from a few weird and possibly immoral situations, yes, there would be repercussions! It’s like the dream where you find yourself in front of a crowd only to look down and realize you aren’t dressed! Oh, the horror and shame and embarrassment! When you wake and realize it is just a dream, the relief if glorious!

My point is this: maybe you aren’t high-profile in the body of Christ, but on the other hand, few would dare to forget you. So if you feel like toe-jam on the journey of life, just remember that a runner changing from tennis shoes to sandals takes the time to check for you!!

I think many people, myself included, have felt this way at one time or another. The truth is that we are never invisible to Jesus. In addition, we are often pleasantly surprised to find that we are visible to far more people than we know!

Yes, comparing ourselves with those above us cause us to feel worthless and comparing ourselves with those below us cause us to be proud - both of which are wrong. Comparing us to what Jesus expects us to be can be encouraging.
