The writer of Hebrews goes on to give us examples of faith in the Old Testament. Surprisingly, some of these examples have less-than-stellar reputations. Jacob the deceiver? Rahab the prostitute? Gideon the doubter? Barak the spineless? Samson the womanizer? Jepthah the foolish? David the adulterer and murderer? It seems to me they have tarnished, if not downright stained, records.
But as I continue to peruse Hebrews 11, I arrive at what I believe to be the linchpin of faith. Verse 34 says, "who out of weakness were made strong." Should we tolerate sin in our lives? Shall we sin that grace might abound? Of course not. Romans 6 takes care of that conundrum. But the good news is that in spite of the fact that I sometimes let my humanness drag me down, by faith I can trust that I can and will be used by God.
