Victim #1 – The Banana, a bright yellow, innocent looking piece of fruit is the most recent one to be added to the hit list. A few years back, Susanne Summers wrote a book introducing a concept called, “Summer-sizing.” In her book she has a list of “Not Allowed” foods. These foods are the ones you should avoid because they are high in sugar. Many other diets jumped on the same wagon and started blaming sugar for all of societies over weight problems. The fact that bananas are a fantastic source of potassium is mute. Since it is high in fructose, the banana will settle right on top of your thighs and should be avoided at all costs! Trying to exercise and eat a balanced diet will not help. Monkeys are genetically similar to humans with a diet mainly consisting of bananas; yet obesity seems to be only high among humans who are supposed to be of higher intelligence.
Victim #2 – The Tomato, a fruit or a vegetable? Nobody knows. The poor tomato has the characteristics of being a fruit but I’ve never seen anyone spread it on their toast or add it to their cereal. Defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as, “A fleshy, smoothed-skinned reddish fruit, eaten as a vegetable.” Who wants to eat something that doesn’t even know what it is? Take a walk down a grocery aisle and see for yourself. Tomato sauce can be found in the pasta row while, tomatoes stewed, chopped or crushed is with the canned fruit two aisles down. It is time we gave the tomato a break and just called it a vegetable. Acceptance is so important.
Victim #3 – The Apple, a fruit that started out with a bad reputation. It is known as the “Forbidden Fruit,” that Eve gave to Adam from the Tree of Wisdom. Genesis 3:6 states, “The woman saw that the tree was beautiful. She saw that its fruit was good to eat and that it would make her wise. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of the fruit to her husband, and he ate it.”(International Children’s Bible NCV) WHAM! One bite and their eyes were opened and they both realized that they had sinned against God and were now standing there naked. Covering themselves with a fig leaf they hid from the Lord. Even though the Bible never quite names the apple as being the fruit that played accomplice to the fall of man, every church across America shows an apple in their Sunday School material. Another saying that can highlight the negativity of the sad, misunderstood apple is, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” If the tree is a lousy tree than the poor apple is deemed rotten. Plus, any farmer can inform you that once apples fall off a tree, they are no longer wanted and are referred to as, “drops.”
Let us develop a plan to help these three deprived foods by starting a “Poor Fruit Campaign.” By displaying these wonderful, nutritional, eye-pleasing pieces of fruit on your dinning room table, (Yes, you can put the tomato in your fruit bowl too) we can show the world we support these crop victims. Now, start eating those bananas while swinging from your chandelier, slice up that tomato and serve it for dessert and finally, crunch into a green, yellow, red, or speckled apple and focus on a positive attribute of this precious fruit, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”
