“Read through page 257 in chapter eight, specifically focus on the topics, “The Art of Listening” and “Body Language”. I also want you to write a one page journal entry covering your observations about in-person conversations you have this week. We’ll discuss the topics in class next week, and you will turn in a typed copy of your journal entry for homework credit. We’re out of time for today. I’ll see everyone back next week.”
Gillian slammed her notebook shut and shoved it into her bag. She hefted the bag onto her shoulder and wandered out of the room.
“Hey Gillie, wait up for me.” Jacob shoved through the crowd of students intent on reaching their next class. “Can you believe that assignment? Journal entries? Seriously?”
Gillian smirked, “I bet it’s going to be a tough one for you, Mr. Can’t-Stop-Talking. You’re actually going to have to slow down and listen for a change. “
“Hey! I resemble that.” Jacob bumped Gillian with his shoulder. “Do you have another class today? If not, let’s go grab lunch. I’m starving!”
Gillian grinned and stopped in the hallway, leaned back against the wall and crossed both arms over her waist. “Before we do, just for grins, let’s do an experiment. It’ll give us something to write about in that journal entry we’re supposed to do. I’ll do several different poses, and you see if you can figure out what my body language is “saying.” If you don’t get it right most of the time, you can buy me lunch. Deal?”
“Uh, deal, I guess.” Jacob looked confused. “Where did this brilliant brainstorm come from?”
“I’m broke.” Gillian laughed. “Okay… let’s start. What is my body language saying now?” Gillian ducked her head and scowled.
“That you’re mad?”
“Bingo! One for one.” Gillian shifted, stuffed her hands in her pockets and propped one foot against the wall, a dreamy look barely concealed the smirk that kept trying to pop loose on her face.
“Daydreaming about something… lunch, maybe?”
Gillian burst into laughter. “Lunch? Is that what guys daydream about?”
“Hey, I’m hungry.” Jacob moaned and clutched his stomach, “I’m about to starve, can’t you tell?”
Gillian cracked up. “Okay, fine. I give. Where are we going? You’re buying, right?”
Jacob dug into his pocket for his wallet and flipped it open, “Yeah, I guess. This time anyway. McDonald’s okay?”
Gillian wrinkled her nose, “I vote for Dairy Queen. I might have enough to get two ice cream cones when we’re done. That work?”
Jacob shrugged, “Works for me.”
Gillian pulled her keys from her pocket, “Let’s go. I’ll drive. We can do our journal entries while we’re there. I have my laptop in my bag. Might as well get it done and out of the way. Race you to the truck. On your mark, get set…”
Jacob took off in a fast sprint.
“Hey!”
Gillian ran laughing behind him, her bag bumping against her side and keys jangling in her hand.
