Where the plains stretch to the sunset,
Dry, dusty, arid;
A seemingly barren womb,
Drab and brown,
Dust-devils whirling skywards,
Dessicated twigs and crackling leaves circling
Above the parched earth
Eleven months of the year.
I know a place
Where the heat bakes down
Glinting off fields of shining quartz
Where lizards lift one foot at a time
Off the ground
To escape the scorching earth
And nothing moves at midday
But the heat haze shimmer
Eleven months of the year.
I know a place
Where strangely shaped trees,
Growing slowly,
Lift their fibrous branches hopefully
Towards the heavens,
Their leaves fat and succulent
Storing every drop of moisture
To feed off in the dry
Eleven months of the year
I know a place
Where a miracle happens
Once a year;
When streams run in the desert
And the baked earth seems to sigh
Relief as it opens it’s cracked surface
To the lifegiving precipitation,
A mercy gift from God after
Eleven drought-ridden months of the year
I know a place
Where flowers push their heads through the newly damp earth,
Thousands upon thousands
Lifting their faces to the sun with joy,
Yellow and blue and orange and white,
Singing a hymn of praise
To their Maker,
And bees dance and dip to their nodding heads
At this special time of the year
I know a place
Where sparkling water gushes from craggy granite,
And from every rocky crack where soil has found a home,
Dainty flowerheads smile;
Tiny flowering bulbs, red and pink and yellow stand proudly
Between jewel-bright flowering succulents
And every step I take reveals new delights;
There is nothing quite like the wonder of Namaqualand
At this special time of the year.
