A softly glowing lamppost animated drifting flakes as winter shed a blanket of white. The “crunch” of footsteps broke the silent night; his destination was in view. Each step he took stirred memories of home and birthday celebrations with family and friends.
Full with love, he blinked hot tears onto his cold cheeks, reminding him of the contrast surrounding his life; loved by some, hated by others. As he looked up the stars seemed to be flashing Morse code from heaven.
Suddenly, through the old wire fence on his right, puffed a cloud of steam from the nostrils of a curious cow, bringing attention to the fact he was not alone. Like chimes in a breeze he faintly heard “Joy to The World” punctuated with laughter.
Now gladly peering through the front room window, he knocked. He saw a tree drooping with lights and ornaments, appearing almost to be propped up with mounds of colorful packages. Rosy-cheeked young ones were bouncing with excitement as the table was being set to overflowing.
Knocking again, he waited and watched as everyone found a place at the table. A quick nod preceded the passing of food. Slowly, quietly he withdrew mourning that on the day of His birth there no longer was room to welcome Him in.
