The birth of a child is a gift of life given only by God, the creator of all things. Should we not celebrate the day of our birth with praises and honor to God each year he blesses us to breathe the breath of life? It seems most often, we celebrate the day of our birth without acknowledging our Great Creator with enough honor and glory.
We are eager to plan huge parties, some surprises and some not, well in advance of our special day, not contemplating God’s word that tomorrow is not promised. Some find that to get another year older may even be quite depressing depending on their age. But however we feel about getting a year older, we tend to fail over and over to recognize the giver of this precious gift in the ways he deserves.
In Psalms 139:14-16 (NKJV), King David tells God:
For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.
How awesome it is to ponder over the fact that God knew every fiber of our being before we were conceived. It is almost to wonderful to fathom, but yet knowing he is the almighty God who has all power in his hands makes acceptance of this fact more conceivable. David recognized the precious gift of life and honored God by acknowledging this to him with praises in these psalms.
We would do well to quote this passage, not only on our birthdays, but everyday as a reminder of God’s gift of life to us.
