Form the warmth and comfort
Of my mother’s womb,
You were there
For You had predestined me to be Your child.
When I was a child, and suffered at the hands
Of one whose heart had been blinded,
Who served darkness of the flesh
And snuffed out all light,
You were there
For I heard your voice with my young heart.
When, as a child, my heart ached so
From hunger and lack of understanding
When I laid awake in my bed
Asking You to take this life
You were there
For You answered me, “No”, in love, wisdom, and mercy.
When I entered into an age of rebellion
And sought revenge on myself, and on others,
Even when I hid my face from You,
In the darkest of recesses
And the murkiest of waters
You were there
For You did not allow me to see complete destruction.
When I sought Your presence
Meagerly and half-heartedly
Unwilling to break the bonds of flesh
You were there
For you pressed me onward, allowing me no comfort in the world.
When my heart matured
And I fought to free myself
From bitterness, hatred, unforgiveness, and sin
You were there,
For You broke the chains that strangled me.
When I opened myself
To the hope of your full residence
Within my soul, my mind, my life
You were there
For You filled me completely, and lavished Your grace on me.
When I sought to repay You
For Your infinite mercy
With works and devotions,
You were there
For You would accept nothing more or less than a broken and contrite heart, ripe for healing.
When I removed the shield from around my heart
And allowed You to fall on me like rain,
To seep into my core, like an all-healing salve,
You were there
For You soothed my spirit, quieted my mind, healed my heart.
When I began to abide in You completely
Walking with the full assurance
Of faith in things yet unseen
You were there
For you blessed my steps, and leveled a path before me.
When the ruler of this world
Came upon me once again
To lead me astray with crafty words
And enticing offers,
You were there
For You protected me with Your armor, and laughed as the dragon fell from the sky.
When, in the weakness of my flesh,
I strayed from the right path
You had set before me
You were there
For you offered me grace and forgiveness, and gently nudged me back to your side.
While I walk with you now
In a world filled with mirror images
Things real, but not whole,
You are with me
For You promise to make all things complete,
You remind me to walk as You walked,
Not in sinful self, but in love
And you arrest my attention to Your glory
So that I see You –
You in heaven, You on earth, You in others, You in me
