After breakfast, my mother gave me a list of chores to do. We lived on a farm and my mother had things to do outside so my chores were inside the house. I quickly tackled the list so I could get finished and slip away into the living area in a comfortable chair to read my book.
Awhile later, my mother came in from outside. She hollered from the kitchen to the living room at me and started down the list asking if I had done each of the chores. I was answering “yes” to each of them, but she always came upon one that I had forgotten. She then would say, “Get your nose out of that book and finish your chores.” She always knew that is what I would be doing.
Finally, after I got through with all my chores, it was safe to go outside and sit in a chair by the picnic table. There I could enjoy the beautiful day as well as lose myself in the current book I was reading.
Reading has always been an important part of my life and I cannot imagine my life without it. When my children were small, I didn’t have much time to read. I started teaching a Sunday school class so I would have an “excuse” to read. Then one day I stumbled upon the scripture found in I Timothy 4:13-14a “Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift...”
My children are now grown and have children of their own, and I am still reading and still teaching. I pray that as I age that my eyes will continue to be good enough so I will always be able to read, but if not, I am thankful that they now have audio books.
