Topic: Reading (01/25/07)
I am an avid reader, so writing on this topic really excited me – at first. I couldn’t wait to get started writing about one of my favorite things. Then as I began, I think I realized what “writer’s block” really is. Usually I can think of something to say about most topics, but all of a sudden I was at a loss for words. Imagine that!

So, I decided to brainstorm – writing every sub-topic that came to mind, eventually expounding a little about each. So…the following is the results. Hope you enjoy!

Reading a book: Of course, it is only natural for me to start here since this is what I do best (grin). My friend and I can discuss books for hours! We both love to read Christian fiction. So do my sister and I, so we e-mail each other often with new titles and authors to read. It is a joy to read these books, and since I also love writing, I find myself noticing the author’s writing style more and more, which is quite helpful.

Reading a palm: Now this is a subject that I know nothing about. I’ve heard about it and seen people (pretend to) do it on T.V., but to actually go to a palm reader? No, don’t think so! Especially since I don’t support anything that resembles the spirit world other than God’s Spirit world!

Reading someone’s mind: Don’t we all think we can do this at times?! Especially if we’re married. Believe me, you can surely get into deep water assuming you know what someone is thinking and telling them so! It is surely safer to communicate verbally. Reading someone’s spirit through the gift of discernment is another matter and I believe God gives that to people when needed.

Reading a magazine: There are magazines on every topic nowadays. You can read about your health, automobiles, sports, fashion and style, housekeeping, how-to-do (most anything), television, movies, and your favorite superstar! The list goes on and on and on. Endless subjects confront us at the check-out stand. Take your pick, but choose wisely…

Reading a newspaper: Weekend issues are best, according to my family. We enjoy reading a Sunday paper from most any city. The local news is interesting and there are always other items of interest tucked inside.

Reading x-rays: This requires training. Aren’t we all thankful for those people who “paid their dues” to read these outlines and inlines (is that a word) of our various body parts? At times we depend on them.

Reading a blueprint: My brother-in-law is an expert at this. He reads and examines other’s work, and his signature is required in order for the project to go forward. It’s good that there are people who can read blueprints. As for me, I don’t have a clue!

Reading instructions: Now we get to the most important one. You haven’t lived till you have tried to put those toys together on Christmas Eve only to find out later you should have read the instructions beforehand! We’ve all heard the expression "if all else fails, read the instructions!"

Here’s another thought: what about our lives? Do we realize that we have an instruction book? The Bible gives us our instructions for living. If we would follow God’s instructions through His Word, we could avoid so much trouble. If we would just take it to heart and apply it each day, we could live with more joy and peace, even if our circumstances and the world at large were in turmoil. This Book has it all: entertainment, how-to, superstars, history and (good) news, tells your future, speaks to you wherever you are, reveals what’s in your mind and heart, equips you for anything, gives you the lay of the land….

Wonder why we don’t take advantage of it more often? The good news is that you can start anytime, and, little by little this Book changes you….because it is different than any other book. The Author knows you by name, and He will give you exactly what you need, helping you to live in victory. Don’t worry if you miss it the first time; He will give you another chance.

Gotta go now and read the instructions!

Good job. You showed me there is so much more to reading than I thought. It was a fun read. If you blog, this would be a great entry I'd read again!

I really liked the idea of your brainstorming becoming your entry. Maybe I should try that some time. ;) I might have combined a few of the "brainstorming" ideas, or had a few less and expounded on them a bit more. Over all a good read that made me smile a bit. :)

Funny--I brainstorm every week, using this same process, but it never occurred to me to write about it! And I came up with many of the same things for "reading." Very fun entry.

I'd suggest that you leave off the first paragraph or two that refer to "the topic" or the challenge, to give your piece a more universal appeal.

I'm glad your brainstorming session led you to write this piece.
