“Yes,” he said, “We have an understanding, the Lord and I. My hands will become wings when He wants me to fly.”
“Really Grandpa, can you fly for real?”
“Oh, yes. I used to fly all the time.”
“Where did you go?”
“Ah, I have visited so many places.”
“Did you fly to Disney Grandpa? Did you see Mickey? If I could fly I would go everywhere. I would go out of space.”
“I do go out of this world sometimes.”
Little Johnny jumped to his feet. “Out of this world!” he exclaimed incredulously.
Grandpa smiled, “You see Little J. one day long ago the Lord told me that He was not going to feed me with milk any more because I was no longer a baby. He decided to give me food I could chew. Had I known that I had to work so hard I would have said, ‘Lord, I am not ready yet’. Instead I kept prayer, ‘Lord, lift me higher’. I knew I had my work cut out for me when I began to feel less of His presence.”
Little Johnny sat down again with his palms cupping his chin and his elbows propped up on his knees. He knew that this was big. He did not want to miss any of it. His fanlike ears opened, extending like antennas. “There were times in the past when God would burn me with His presence several times a day, giving me inspiration to speak, to write or even to keep silent.
Little Johnny could not help himself. “God burned you grandpa?” he interjected.
“Oh, yes. It is a special feeling I get inside when God wants to let me know something.” Half satisfied with the explanation Little Johnny decided not to interrupt anymore. He listened intently while Grandpa continued, eager to get to the flying part.
“I began to struggle with the things I needed to do for God. Sometimes I even forget to pray. It was hard work. The hardest part was trying to remember that I did not have to work. I could rest, because when I rest my hands became wings.”
“Now to the good part,” Little Johnny thought.
Grandpa continued. “There were times when I fall down and there was nowhere to go but up. Those are the times I find my wings and fly. Sometimes I sit precariously on the verge of faith afraid to go forward but when I take a step I feel vulnerable because I feel nothing underneath. That’s when my hands become wings and I start to fly.
“What do you mean Grandpa?”
“When your grandma and I were young,” Grandpa explained, “Way before your father was born, (Little Johnny chuckled) we wanted to buy a house. We could not get the money to borrow from the bank. We prayed and trusted God to provide a home that we could afford. There was a house that we liked in a beautiful neighborhood. We had saved up a little money which we decided to use as a part of the down payment. It was not enough. When we gave the man the money there was none left to pay all the other bills and we had to come up with the other part to of the down payment by the following week. We were broke. I felt like I did not know what I was doing.”
Grandpa stared away in space for a bit. Little Johnny wandered if he was asleep but his eyes were open. Grandpa continued the story.
“I knew that God knew what He was doing so I decided to trust Him completely. I believed that He would help us somehow. I was ready to fly. The next day I went to the bank to try borrowing money again. This time they told us that they had reconsidered and had decided to loan us the money. So we were able to pay the balance on the down payment with money left over.
“Did you fly to your new home?”
“We sure did”
“Wow!”
Did Grandma get wings too?”
“Oh, yes.”
“Wow!”
Little Johnny thought for a moment. “Grandpa,” he began, “Are your hands wings now?” He looked at his grandpa’s hands.
“Yes, son, these hands are still wings. My work on earth is done. Soon I will fly away home.”
