I am at the top of the St. Louis Arch. On one side I see the Mighty Mississippi River, flowing fast, wide, and dark. What was once full of trees is now a forest of factories along the banks of the river, using the water to power industry. The other side shows a bustling downtown, full of skyscrapers, corporations, and food trucks lining the streets. The stunning architecture fills the blocks with steel, glass, sharp lines, and solid structure. These feats of men stand high above the people on the ground below.

As the river flows on one side, cars do on the other.

As the factories tower on one side, skyscrapers do on the other.

And the Arch stands in the middle, symbolizing the gateway to a new land, a hopeful future, adventure, fortune, and the promise of something more. Rising high above the ground, this view allows me a unique perspective. I see the world below me, and I see it miles away. I see what man has created next to what God has created. What was once a land of potential is now a bustling city.

I feel bigger than the world below me at this height. I feel important. I feel like I can do anything, like I am unstoppable. I want the “more” the arch offers. I see what man has made and think, “I can do that, too.” From this high up, I lose perspective on my limits. There’s suddenly no fear in me, nothing holding me back. Towering over the world below, I marvel at what man is capable of. I long to be part of it.

I pledge then to adopt this perspective and remember this feeling when I return to ground. I pledge to not let my fears limit me from participating along with Holy Spirit working in my life. I pledge to be an active part of the kingdom of heaven, here and now, and step into my unique position in the world to make the impact that only I can make. I pledge to embrace my God-given potential.

I ride the elevator car back down to ground, step on the grass below, feeling gravity pull me back to earth. I look around to see the river, the factories, the skyscrapers, and the food trucks. My perspective is limited from this angle. I can’t see as much, as far, or as clearly. But I know God does. So my pledge remains.
