Thursday evening, Pieter, my husband, is watching TV, our little girl, Ashley is laying on her daddy’s chest, she is 11 months old daddy’s little girl. We have two boys as well who are asleep, they are 6 and 4 and our oldest goes to kinder garden so early to bed for them. Ashley still needs another bottle and then we all can go to bed for a seriously, much needed rest.
We love our life, our kids. Life it’s pretty exhausting at times. Till this moment it is a very normal evening. I’m busy cleaning dishes, as I check up on my hubby and daughter on the couch, my heart stops, our little girl is purple, I notice she isn’t breathing. A scream follows and wakes up my hubby who had dozed off. Panicky I yell, she isn’t breathing call an ambulance. My hubby by now is wide awake, he jumps up and runs outside with Ashley, close to his chest, tucked in his arms. We live in a townhouse, it is the middle of January, it is minus 20 Celsius outside, besides and between each home we have piles of snow;3 feet high. My hubby starts jumping over the snow ridges, he is going five houses over. All the while I’m thinking impossible, as all this happens. My hubby is an IT, sits behind a desk most of the day, he is not in the best of shapes, a smoker. Again; impossible, runs through my head. Is he nuts? He makes it to the house he was aiming for, the neighbor who lives there is a nurse and happens to be home. Coincidence? I think not. As all this transpires, my heart is racing, feelings, emotions are between, fear, panic, anger. I didn’t understand my husband’s plan immediately, my fear had gotten the better of me, my husband’s logical, even keel nature was totally in control, praise God.
The nurse said: ”she is having a seizure and is swallowing her tongue that is why she cannot breathe” she then went to her kitchen grabbed a spoon and placed it, with the rounded side, behind her tongue to prevent Ashley choking on it. Her husband phoned an ambulance, I ran over to another neighbor to arrange someone to stay with our sons. We had immigrated to Canada a year ago, we had no family close to call upon, it was all very frightening, never have I felt so helpless in my life.
At the hospital we found out our daughter was having a seizure because she was suddenly running a high fever due to an inner ear infection. To make a long story short, she was put on Phenobarbital and would be taking this for the next 5 years. The next year I became a believer and although the years that followed were still off and on frightening, at the same time I experienced a peace as well. You say impossible, yes that would make sense, with God nothing makes sense to us, His ways are not our ways and worry and peace can be together in one’s mind.
It was absolutely God’s timing to draw me close to Him and reveal Himself, Ashley had several tests done including a spinal tap at age 4, without my faith I don’t think I would have survived that. This needle into her back. I had to hold her and keep her quiet, no sedation for this procedure.
Singing praises, praying over my girl, crying out to the One that would hear and help me, He was and is, her and my salvation, our sanity, our peace. My hubby came to the Lord half a year after I did, my whole demeanor, attitude made him believe as well. My hubby’s exact words were;” there is a God”!
We serve an awesome God, all our children are saved, most of our grandkids are, a whole family once lost; was found, with God all things are possible. Mark10;27 We know and believe the rest will too for we know and have learned God works with households, to Him be the glory, now and forever, amen!
