Exasperated Bob looked across from the table at Gelda and began speaking in a low tone and soft voice that was so unusual for Bob. He looked so sombre saying to Gelda, "hey, do you think this is all worth it?" Gelda was taken by complete surprise and replied saying, "what?" "What are you talking about Bob!? With still a sombre tone Bob repeated his words, "I said, is it really worth it?". "Worth what, what do you mean Bob?" "Well, staying on the farm I mean, the drought has taken a firm hold, our cattle are dying and we have no money left to feed them Gelda", he replied. "I'm positive God is trying to get us off this farm", Bob continued. "But why on earth would God want that Bob!" she exclaimed. "Surely you have more faith than that, don't worry Bob, the rains will come soon, keep praying", Gelda said.
Bob yelled back in a harsh tone, "I'm tired of waiting Gelda, we simply cannot wait anymore!" "Don't you understand, I will have to kill our cattle, we cannot feed them, you just don't understand!" Bob began to weep almost uncontrollably, his heart was broken, he was in total despair, not knowing where to turn.
Gelda began to pray softly in a whisper asking God to help, "oh please, please dear God, help us, help our cattle, we need rain". Bob had noticed Gelda praying and began yelling at her to stop, he couldn't take it anymore, he had given up on both God and himself it seemed. "Gelda, just accept what it is, God has it in for us, stop praying already, if God was going to help us he would have done it by now!" But Gelda continued to pray albeit Bob's yelling and negative stance.
"Bob!" she exclaimed, "what is that noise, oh dear God what now". Gelda thought, and they both got off their chairs and rushed outside to investigate. "What the heck is that rumbling sound, must be a passenger plane above the clouds, let's go back inside", Bob said in a calm voice. Before they could both turn they noticed a chill in the air and the sky was becoming dark with rain clouds. They stopped to look at one another sheepishly, wondering if by some miniscule chance God had finally sent the rains that were long overdue.
"Bob, am I wishful thinking or did I just feel a rain drop, drop on my head?" Bob's eyes began to glisten with soft tears as they began to roll down his cheek. Falling to his knees he began to ask God is this was truly the rain, or some delusional wishful thinking in their heads. Within a minute or two rain was pelting down on them both, thunder was rolling from above them, the smell of freshly watered grass in their nostrils.
"Gelda, it is raining, no it's actually pouring, it's thundering and it's even lighting up the sky!" Bob still on his knees began apologizing to God profusely, "oh dear God, I am so sorry I doubted you, but my heart is aching, our cattle are dying, I thought you'd never come!"
Turning gently to face Bob and walking toward him, Gelda gently placed her hand upon his shoulder saying, "Bob, you are the one that does not understand that God waits for us to come to him with our hearts and kneel before him". "God gives us the things we need according to the faith in our heart and when we need them and not so much as when we want them. Sometimes Bob, we have to be patient and wait, God cannot be rushed, in his great wisdom he knows the right time for the rains to come and it is now". Bob rose to his feet, looked up to the heavens, gave thanks and said; "thank God, the wait is over, the rains have come".
