The cat’s huge, luminous eyes stared at me belligerently over the broken fragments of plate that must have fallen from the table, probably in the scuffle. It appeared to be on guard, ears upright as if they had been starched, with its creamy blood stained muzzle drawing attention to lopsided whiskers freshly cleansed.
“Oh, cat,” I thought, “Why can’t you speak, and tell me what happened here.”
The body on the floor would never move again but the cat sprang, swishing its tail, and leaving a smear of solitary paw print on the carpet before clattering through the cat door and out into the garden.
I knelt, my mind in overdrive as I reconstructed the last moments. He had come in through the window, realised he was in an annexe, closed to the rest of the house, and done an about turn. A large mirror on the wall reflected a part of the garden, green leaves shimmering in the breeze. It must have been confusing, and his last view as his body hit the glass would have been of the great outdoors he would never fly in again.
