The grogginess still clinging, but almost banished, she opened her eyes. Suddenly there was her beloved staring back at her. Smiling, he gently brushed the hair from her forehead and kissed her cheek. She knew that particular smile of his. He had news.
But what to Abram seemed like tidings of great joy were only drops of water to Sarai’s arid heart. She was to be an aunt---again.
It wasn’t that she didn’t love her nephews and nieces. An aunt had a privileged and blissful position in sharing life’s journey with these precious ones. Her arms had known the warmth of their hugs. Her eyes had marveled at their growth. Her ears had heard the music of their laughter that made her heart dance.
And yet she yearned for more. When was it her turn? Had it not been promised? But who could trust a promise made so very long ago? Who would ever believe that there was yet hope for one as old as her.
So with a smile on her lips but a sigh in her heart, Sarai rose to congratulate the expectant one. For why miss out on today’s joy and laughter while waiting for the morrows.
