Because of a rare bone disease that I was born with, the doctors said we had a 50/50 chance of my children having my disability. God gave me better odds than that. I had some folks look down their noses at me and say, “You mean you are going to risk bringing someone disabled like you into the world? You should just have your tubes tied.” Ouch! But you know, God protected me. I remember hearing their words then but not really feeling their sting. Well, until now—as I type this, I realize I’d really like to box their ears! My own mother was mad at me for deciding to have a baby.
The ultra sound told us many things. That we were having a girl. That she was all in one piece, her heart was strong and she had no broken bones at this point in time and...the most beautiful news to me...was what that picture of that solid bone represented. God had answered my prayers. It was proof of God’s gift to me. My baby did not have my disability. I couldn’t wait to show the grandparents. I showed everyone we met. Kind of like the avid fisherman with pictures of his catch that you’d just as soon not see...there I was with my bone picture and just as excited as the fisherman.
Now, as I watch both of my girls run and play, shoot hoops, ice skate, roller skate, dance a ballet, climb mountains, run for miles in a track meet, fall down and get up laughing, and do all the other things I have never been able to do, I say, “Thank you Lord,” and the image of the bone picture creeps into my mind--His gift to me. It will always be proof in my hands that He hears our prayers. It will always be a reminder for me to be thankful for His grace. My girls will always be proof to me that God is still in the special-delivery miracle business. I have a little wall plaque in my kitchen that simply says, Jesus still makes house calls.” I am so thankful.
