now move it down t’wards your breast.
Make a tap on your left shoulder
and do the same on the right.
To finish, put both hands to rest.
This custom - the sign of the cross,
in early times was simply made --
drawn with a thumb high in the air
or on a wall, fixed by a kiss.
Was it a secret masquerade?
Surely, we have seen the movies
exorcists making this same sign.
Using knives, sticks, even their arms,
turning away demon spirits,
did they invoke Power divine?
Some battle against cross jew’lry
a crucifix is too much gloss.
“Idols,” they cry with a vengeance.
Candidly I invite all men
to sample my thoughts on the cross.
The cross is an ark of safety
to escape the wrath of our God.
Noah survived degradation
as he entreated repentence
from a selfish, arrogant mob.
As Moses raised up the serpent
Christ must also be lifted high.
Does a cross that is worn or displayed
show His humble obedience?
Does it tell why He chose to die?
The cross – the key to eternal hope
hear Jesus plea, “Father forgive!”
It's the key by which our Advocate
mystified the ancient foe and
redeemed all those seeking to live.
Craft your own sign of the cross
State the evidence for your zeal.
Be ready in a moment’s time
to shield your belief from assault.
This is my straightforward appeal --
I place my right hand on my head
recalling the mind of our Christ.
I move it past my mouth to my heart
reminding me to guard my tongue
and speak the truth that stirs my breast.
I tap both left and right shoulders
rememb’ring Christ’s call to action.
When I quit my hands from service
relaxing in God sovereign grace,
I rest in His satisfaction.
