Topic: Life (06/15/06)
When I gave birth to my first child I had a relatively good idea of what would happen, mechanically speaking. Although I needed a little help getting started, after a while delivery seemed to be progressing nicely. Eventually the head began to show which is called crowning. It can be tricky because sometimes the baby stalls there which is what happened to me. The doctors managed to help me avoid a caesarean section. But there was a moment there when I was intimately aware of that connection between life and death.

A binding tie
A three stranded cord
Pulsing conduit
Of nourishment

A noose
A rope around the neck
Preventing expulsion
And birth

At once life giving
And potentially
Life taking
The travail of delivery

Standing
But really lying
Gasping for breath
On the brink of creation

The earth revolving
The sun shining
What is that
Compared to this?

Now is the imaging of God
Bearing life from life
Good and evil contending
Microcosm of the universe

Wow! This is gorgeous free verse. No need to clutter it up with the introductory paragraph...That just gets in the way here. Perhaps in another piece you could examine your experience in more of a prose style; but this stands alone, oustanding. Every stanza contains a powerful image, painted in short, graceful strokes that make the reader want to read it again and again. That's what really good poetry does; a reader can taste it, like fine chocolate. Bravo!
